Vikings top Bobcats, Bucks for VanDenBerg title

NILES — For the second straight year, the Niles soccer team won the VanDenBerg Invitational championship at the Viking Stadium Saturday.
Niles are 2-0 under Head Coach Jaycee Myer. There was no tournament in was canceled the year before she took over the Viking program, and it was canceled in 2020 due to COVID 19.
Niles blanked cross-town rival Brandywine 4-0 in the semifinals before rolling to a 7-1 lead over Buchanan in the championship match.
“We started out slow letting up an early goal, but we turned it up a notch and came back to play our game,” Myer said. “We never let up and played to our full potential today. Everyone stepped up and did their job. I am a proud coach.”
Against the Bobcats, Nyla Hover had a hat trick (three goals), while Claire DevlescHoward also found the back of the net. Amelia Florkowski and Kelsea Slater both had assists.
In the title match, Slater scored four goals. Amity Riggenbach and Florkowski each had a goal off a penalty kick. Taya Young had the other goal for the Vikings.
DevlescHoward had a pair of assists. Florkowski and Riggenbach both finished with an assist.
