EDWARDSBURG — A local organization is aiming to bring the community together with its annual Memorial Day event.
The Edwardsburg Sports Complex, 27566 US-12, is preparing to host its second annual Hero Run 5K Run and 2K Walk Monday, May 27. Sponsored by St. Clair Apparel, AM Auxiliary Post 365, VFW Post Auxiliary 2284 and Post 2284 Riders, the event aims to honor veterans, active duty and public service professionals.
“Military is very strong in our family,” said event organizer Caitlin Ferguson. “They do such a service for us and protect us. We just want to show them some respect.”
There will be a 5K run and a 2K fun walk, starting at 8 a.m. with check-ins starting at 7 a.m. The race will begin and finish at the ESC’s cross country trail. Registration fee is $35, which includes a run t-shirt and snacks. First, second and third place medals will be awarded.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the development of a memorial area in the complex where community members can gather in memory of loved ones. The proceeds will be placed in a restricted fund, which will continue to go with each event until ESC is able to establish the area.
“It is not veteran-specific,” Ferguson said. “But it is an opportunity for people to have a place to go in memory of loved ones.”
Ferguson said that opportunities remain for people and businesses to donate an additional sponsorship, which would get their name on a future event T-shirt. Those interested in participating can register online at edwardsburgsportscomplex.org or by calling (269) 414-4417. In addition, ESC is also gearing up for its 14th annual Benefit Golf Scramble to be held Saturday, June 1 at Four Lakes Country Club, 22786 US 12, Edwardsurg. Registration starts at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Cost to play in this year’s Benefit Golf Scramble is $80 per player or $320 per team.
