NILES — After having its streak of five consecutive trips to the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals snapped last year, the Edwardsburg tennis team rebounded by finishing third and qualifying for the finals.

Parma Western was the regional champion at Battle Creek Harper Creek as it swept the doubles flights and scored 23 points. Vicksburg was the runner-up with 19 points.

Edwardsburg was third with 18 points and Niles seventh with four points. The Eddies scored enough points to earn a spot in the state finals, which will be played in the Kalamazoo Area May 31 and June 1.

The Eddies had one regional champion as Erin Letter defeated Natalie Hyde, of Parma Western 6-4 and 6-1.

Julia Lewis reached the finals at No. 1 singles before falling to Maya Grossman, of Vicksburg, 6-0 and 6-2.

In doubles, Abby Pryor and Mya Eberlein were the runner-up at the No. 2 flight after losing to Gabi Davis and Leslie Kinder, of Parma Western, 2-6, 602 and 6-2. At No. 4 doubles, the Eddies’ Olivia Closson and Libby Freudenburg were the runner-up after falling to Parma Western’s Silvia Baker and Sophia Nguyen 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
