John Ray Wittmuss, 76, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, in Niles, Michigan.
John was born on Dec. 23, 1947, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Alfred Wittmuss Jr. and Jean (Grundas) Wittmuss.
Along with his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of many years, Deborah A. (Mooney) Wittmuss, and brothers, Robert T. Wittmuss and Alfred T. Wittmuss.
Left to cherish the memory of John are his nephews, Jeff (Glennis) Wittmuss and Kevin (Amy) Wittmuss.
A man of many interests, John found tranquility and solace in the gentle care of his garden—a place where he cultivated beauty and fostered growth much like he did within the walls of his schools. John enjoyed attending symphonies and had a great appreciation for art. These refined pleasures enriched his spirit and infused his daily life with joy.
John’s journey into education began at Central Michigan University. There he received his degree in Education, a field where he would soon excel. John also received his Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University and also graduated from the Indiana Principal Leadership Academy. He met his lifelong companion and love, Deborah while attending Central Michigan University. Their love blossomed into a lifetime commitment when they exchanged vows at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in November of 1979, igniting a partnership that proved to be as enduring as it was loving.
John left his indelible mark on the world as a dedicated elementary school teacher at Brandywine and an esteemed principal in the communities of La Porte, IN, and Bridgeport. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched with his wisdom, patience, and guiding hand.
A man of honor and courage, John proudly served his country in the United States Army. His service exemplified the values he lived by—integrity, loyalty, and a strong sense of duty. John’s life was a testament to living one’s values and leaving an enduring impact on the world. His gentle guidance, heartfelt wisdom, and earnest love will be sorely missed but forever cherished in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to encounter him.
Per John’s wishes, he will be laid to rest at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens, 61453 M-51, Niles, MI 49120 with his wife, Deborah on Friday, June 7, 2024 at 11 a.m.
