St. Joseph man killed in farm tractor crash

SILVER CREEK TOWNSHIP — A St. Joseph man was killed in a farm tractor crash in Silver Creek Township, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Richard J. Behnke reports that CCSO deputies responded to a farm tractor crash on Garrett Rd. north of Middle Crossing Rd. in Cass County’s Silver Creek Township. This crash occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. Saturday, April 6. Investigation of the crash showed that a tractor pulling a farm implement lost control and jack knifed. The driver of the tractor, Nathan Scherer, 23, of St. Joseph, was ejected from the cab before the tractor rolled onto him. Scherer was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is not known at this time if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Assisting on scene were Indian Lake Fire Department and the Pokagon Tribal Police. The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s Office.
