NILES — A local church is aiming to bring the community together with its new Easter weekend event.

Mount Calvary Baptist Church will host its second annual Resurrection 5K Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Niles Riverfront Park Amphitheater.

The free, family-friendly event will include a 5K walk – beginning and ending at the amphitheater – that will take participants on a scenic route through the Riverwalk Trail. The event will culminate with an Easter egg hunt, food and refreshments at 11:30 a.m. at Plym Park.

Mount Calvary Baptist Pastor Bryant Bacon said he was looking to create a new community-oriented event and was inspired by the Niles-Buchanan YMCA’s annual Thanksgiving Day Run to create a 5K walk for the church last year.

This year, Bacon and Mount Calvary have partnered with Relevant Church and other local faith communities to help bring the event to life. Bacon is hoping the event will continue to grow.

“Our goal is really to just highlight the resurrection Sunday,” Bacon said. “As a faith community, we want to celebrate what I call the ‘Super Bowl of Sundays’ and just bring awareness to it by doing something other than just having Easter services and Easter egg hunts and stuff like that. We wanted to do something different.”

Bacon emphasized that everyone in the community is invited to attend.

“We want to get the community involved,” Bacon said. “It’s not just for people who go to church or people who believe in Christ, it’s for anybody. Even if you just want to come out and walk just to be a part of a fellowship.”
