EDWARDSBURG — The Edwardsburg Village Council met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, greeted by a larger than normal audience.

Several members of the audience were members of the Ontwa Township Planning Commission, related entities, or members of the public there to speak in support of approving the right-of-way for the Elkhart Road Path. Though the village council had voted not to assist in funding the project, the township is still moving forward on their own and required the right-of-way permission to do so. Proponents argued that the path would aid in economic development for the area and would create a path to be used by families, children and residents. Representatives of the township emphasized that all future maintenance costs would be funded by the township.

The ROW permission was approved, with Trustees Stoner and Penny voting against.

A public hearing was held regarding the Proposed 2024-2025 Budget, though no one in attendance chose to speak about it. The budget was approved later in the regular meeting. Trustees also approved amendments to the current budget in the month of March.

The Cemetery Board reported that a bidding process had started for lawn care, raking leaves, and leaf disposal. They are also investigating the option of straightening out the back entrance roadway in the cemetery in order to allow for easier movement of equipment. They are also considering the construction of a cremation wall.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new library will take place on Wednesday, May 8th at 10am. The event will take place at the old Edwardsburg Library Park.

The board approved the purchase and installation of precast concrete road ends by Selge Construction at the end of Lake Street. The project, at the cost of $12500, will allow for launching boats at the site.

Water Superintendent, Rich Low, reported steady progress on the construction of the new iron filtration plant. The council approved the purchase of a requested cylinder barricade needed for the storage of chlorine bottles, a cart to move them, and a clean-up sink.

Progress on upgrades at Gunn Park continue. President Denis Peak thanked the Edwardsburg Lions Club for their donation that allowed the village to finish the pavilion.

The next Village Council meeting will take place 7 p.m. Monday, April 15 at the Village Hall.
