NILES — A Niles man who fled police and tampered with an electronic device was sentenced to jail Monday in Berrien County Trial Court.

Devin Anthony-Allen Cashier, 32, of Niles, pleaded guilty to third degree fleeing police and tampering with an electronic device and was sentenced to two concurrent terms of 120 days in jail with credit for 92 days served. He must pay $456 in fines and costs.

The incidents occurred nearly seven years ago on May 15, 2017 for the fleeing charge and June 4, 2017 for the tampering with an electronic device charge, both in Buchanan Township. The latter incident came when he cut off his tether monitoring device and left the area to be there for the birth of one of his children.

Cashier told the judge that he couldn’t take running any more.

“I was looking over my shoulder all the time and I want to lead by example for my children,” he said.

Judge Smith said she gave him credit for being honest and turning himself in.

“Probation doesn’t seem useful if you’ve made changes in your life since then,” she said.
