Elkhart man dies in two-vehicle crash in Calvin Township

EDWARDSBURG — A 67-year-old Elkhart, Indiana man was killed when a vehicle struck a deer, which was propelled through the windshield in Calvin Township Thursday night.
Cass County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the area of Cassopolis Road and Bullhand Street for a report of a two-vehicle accident at approximately 6:54 p.m.
Investigation showed that driver Alyssa Handschu, 20, of Osceola, Indiana, was traveling northbound on Cassopolis Road when she struck a deer that was in the roadway. Another vehicle was traveling southbound on Cassopolis Road when the impact of the first crash propelled the deer through the southbound vehicle’s windshield, causing a second crash.
The second driver, Daniel Haskett, 67, of Elkhart, Indiana, then drove off the roadway where his vehicle came to rest.
Handschu sustained no injuries from the accident. Haskett was pronounced deceased on scene from injuries sustained in the crash.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. All involved wore Seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation.
Assisting Cass County Sheriff’s Office on scene was Ontwa Township Edwardsburg Police, Michigan State Police, Porter Township Fire Department, and SEPSA EMS.
