CASSOPOLIS — A Crown Point, Indiana man is being given the chance to address his drug addiction problem, but he’s still facing a possible nine year prison sentence in Indiana.

 

Ryan Roger Myers, 44, of Crown Point, Ind., pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine and was sentenced to three years probation, credit for 171 days served, completion of the Adult Treatment Court and Twin County Probation programs and $2,628 in fines and costs.

The incident occurred Sept. 13, 2023 near Edwardsburg. Myers fled Indiana police into Michigan when he was stopped. Police found methamphetamine and a pipe in the car.

Defense attorney Robert Drake said Myers wants to get help for his addiction but realizes that he could be sent back to Indiana to serve a prison term. “They’re recommending executing a nine year prison term in Indiana which throws a monkey wrench in the matter,” he said.

“We can’t predict what Indiana will do, that’s the elephant in the room,” Drake added. “Mr. Myers says a couple of things makes him hopeful that Indiana will give him a chance. He’d like the opportunity for probation. If he doesn’t do the ATC program, the Indiana sentence would swallow up the Michigan sentence.”

Judge Herman said he had considered sentencing Myers to prison in Michigan but would give him the opportunity on probation. “At age 44, one might think you’re getting old enough to get drugs out of your life, it’s not a matter of if you’re going to get caught but when,” he said.

“I’ll go ahead and give you the opportunity, it may come to fruition or not,” the judge added. “If Elkhart sends you to prison, that violates your probation here and if you violate our program you could go to prison in both states and they may end up being consecutive sentences. You may end up adding prison time on top of prison time if you don’t take it seriously.”
