Roadrunners swept by Bruins in conference opener

DOWAGIAC — The Southwestern Michigan College women’s basketball team showed some rust in its 75-74 Michigan Community College Athletic Association Western Conference loss to Kellogg Community College at 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse Wednesday night.
The Roadrunners, who were x-0 at home entering the game, got off to a good start, but still trailed the Bruins 20-19 after 10 minutes of play.
The rust of an 11-day layoff due to scheduling and weather, showed up in the second quarter when Kellogg outscored Southwestern Michigan 24-11 to open up a 44-30 lead.
The Roadrunners (xx, 0-1 Western Conference) tried to rally in the second half as they outscored the Bruins 44-31, including 20-9 in the fourth quarter, but could not overcome halftime deficit.
Cameron Thomas (Hazel Crest, Illinois) scored 27 points to lead Southwestern Michigan, while Macey Laubach (Edwardsburg) added 17 point, They were the only SMC players to reach double figures.
Niles’ Amara Palmer finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Nalani Williams (St. Louis, Missouri) added eight points, 10 rebounds and six steals.
The Roadrunners were back in action Saturday as they host the Spring Arbor JV.
Men’s Basketball
Kellogg jumped out to a 41-33 halftime advantage, without a Roadrunner comeback in the second half before pulling away to an 88-73 MCCAA Western Conference victory Wednesday night.
The loss was the third straight for Southwestern Michigan, which drops to 8-7 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Rodell Davis Jr. (Glenview, Illinois/Glenbrook) scored 23 points to lead the Roadrunners, who also got 13 points from Aries Hull (Chicago/Bolingbrook) and 11 points from Prince Adams (Evanston, Ilinois/Evanston Township). Hull also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Davis had five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Southwestern Michigan hosted Grace Christian College JV Saturday.
