CASSOPOLIS — A local nonprofit organization is gearing up to host its annual events celebrating the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Cassopolis-based nonprofit organization League for Encouraging Empowerment will be hosting its 25th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration and has events planned for community members to attend.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14 at the United Presbyterian Church, LEE will have a special service celebrating the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday. Students will read their written essays on a positive influential person, past or present. Area churches will participate with singing, prayers and scriptures. Cassopolis football coach Jeremiah Lee, Cass County Treasurer Hope Anderson and Cassopolis Public Schools Board of Education Trustee William Lee will be speaking on the theme “Advancing The Dream”.
Monday, Jan. 15, will be a “Day of Service”. LEE will be providing breakfast for Stone Lake Woods Apartments in Cassopolis. Food preparations will begin at 7 a.m. at the Church of Cassopolis kitchen and meals will be delivered by 9 a.m.
At 9 a.m. at The Church of Cassopolis, 520 Pearl St., a breakfast and round table discussion will be hosted on how the community can “Advance the Dream,” the barriers faced and solutions short and long-term.
Weather permitting, the annual march from the US Post Office to the Historic Courthouse parking lot will take place at 11 a.m.
“Remember MLK Day is a ‘Day on, Not a Day Off,’” said event organizer Carmen Peake. “This holiday emphasizes the importance of giving service to humanity.”
