Southwestern Michigan facing top-ranked competition

DOWAGIAC — The second season for the Southwestern Michigan College men’s and women’s basketball teams has seen a strengthening of both schedules.

Through the 2023 portion of their schedules, the Roadrunner men’s basketball team has played new No. 1-ranked (Division II) Parkland College, which defeated Southwestern Michigan 72-52 after the Roadrunners put up a battle in the opening 20 minutes of the contest.

Southwestern Michigan will face No. 19-ranked Kalamazoo Valley Community College twice in the new year (Jan. 24 at home and Feb. 17 in Oshtemo) as well as No. 5-ranked South Suburban College on Jan. 3.

The Roadrunner women’s basketball team will also face a top five rated team when No. 3-ranked (Division III) Owens Community College comes to the 1st Source Bank Fieldhouse Dec. 20.

The Southwestern Michigan College wrestling team has also seen some top-ranked competition as some of the tournaments it has attended.

The Roadrunners faced Indian Hills, which is tied with SMC at No. 14 in the latest rankings, as well a Triton, which is ranked No. 9, at the Art Kraft Invitational in River Grove, Illinois this past weekend.
