NILES — For more than four decades, thousands of runners and walkers have flocked to Niles on Thanksgiving Day morning to compete in the annual Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run.
Thursday was no exception as more than 2,200 runners and walkers competed in the event, which helps raise money for the YMCA’s programs, including water safety, youth sports, Summer My Way Day Camp and Y-Club, which is before and after school care and more.
The runners and walkers hit the streets at 8 a.m. for the 10K race and five minutes later in the 5K Walk and Run. A one-mile Fun Run was held at 8:15 a.m.
Kush Grewal, of Granger, Indiana was the overall and top male finisher in the 10K race with a time of 35:03. Audrey Carter, of Whitesburg, Tennessee, was the top female finisher as she posted a time of 41:21.
More than 300 runners participated in the 10K event.
In the 5K Walk and Run, George Scupan was the overall and top male finnnisher with a time of 17:12. Sarah Disanza, of Rochester, was the top female finisher with a time of 17:29.
More than 1,800 walkers and runners took part in the 5K race.
