Richard Henry “Dick” Boepple, 93, died in his home on Nov. 9, 2023. Dick was born at home on Oct. 28, 1930, in Berrien Springs, MI to Henry and Mildred (Marquardt) Boepple. When he was 1, his family moved to their farm on Redfield Street in Edwardsburg where he lived until moving to the village proper.
Dick is survived by 2 children, Janet Adams and John Boepple, and 5 grandchildren, Julie (Pedro) Cisneros, Noelle (Andrew) Bullard, Leah (Ross) Freedenberg, Lindsey (Tim) Stone and Corey Boepple. His legacy further extends to 9 beloved great-grandchildren: Samson, Levi, Abner and Elliot Cisneros, Miriam and Everett Bullard, Simon Freedenberg, Alexis and Abigail Stone, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 61 years, Jo-Ann Kerr Boepple, his brothers and sisters, Lois Jean Wallton, Arlene Hunt and Robert D. Boepple, his children, James Boepple and Jill Boepple, and his brother-in-law, John Kerr.
In 1948, Dick proudly graduated from Edwardsburg High School, transitioning directly into a career at Excel Industries. After being drafted into the Army in 1953 during the Korean War, Dick served 2 years in the DMZ and then returned home, where he married Jo-Ann, and resumed working for his former employer. With the help of his father, Dick built a new family home in Edwardsburg where he and Jo-Ann raised their family and established the foundation of their lives together.
Known for his integrity and belief in the good of others, Dick dedicated himself to serving the community. In 1958, he joined the Edwardsburg Volunteer Fire Department, eventually appointed Fire Chief. He faithfully served in this position for many years and was instrumental in the building of the new fire station (currently Jayson’s). For over 50 years, Dick was an active member of the Cass County Fireman’s Association.
A stalwart supporter of the American Legion Post 365, Dick played a pivotal role in fundraising for a new building in the 1970’s. His involvement included holding various offices, coordinating events, maintaining the facility, gathering flags for flag burning, and volunteering for Legion activities.
With the founding of the Edwardsburg Area Historical Museum, in part by his wife, Dick assumed additional responsibilities, contributing to yard maintenance, furniture moving, and various odd jobs. In retirement, he served on the Village’s Cemetery Board and completed cemetery maintenance, including mowing.
Renowned for his impeccable yard and abundant vegetable gardens, Dick possessed a knack for gardening and a talent for repairing anything in need. In retirement, Dick and Jo-Ann spent most winters in their Tampa, Florida home where they grew citrus trees, and served fresh-pressed juice to family and friends.
A dedicated family man, Dick felt a deep responsibility to show up for his loved ones, no matter how large or small the obligation. He attended countless events for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From sports games and practices, to umpiring Little League games, he was a constant presence, supporting his family in all of their endeavors. His attendance extended to innumerable plays, recitals, musicals, graduations, award ceremonies and a never-ending list of meetings. To his children, it seemed he attended meetings most weeknights.
