CASSOPOLIS — In a time of stay-at-home orders, most churches in Michigan have dismissed worship services and other gatherings until further notice, and local pastors are saying it is increasingly noticeable as Easter approaches.

Most churches and pastors have tried to step-up to meet the new challenges by developing and using social media to be connected. Tim Foreman, the pastor at the First Church of God in Cassopolis, said he has been diligent in text messaging, calling and sending emails to congregation members. He has also recorded sermons of encouragement for each of the closed Sundays to date. These are designed to bring strength and perspective to members and the community at large, he said.

The 10-to-12 minute sermons are recorded and posted on the church’s Facebook page, cassfcog. The First Church of God Facebook page is public and open to all. Anyone who would value hearing these and making connections is encouraged by Foreman to go to cassfcog Facebook after 9:30 a.m. on all upcoming Sundays during the duration of these pandemic closures.

Foreman also encouraged people to intentionally call one another and pray for one another, and while honoring the restrictions, still offer assistance when advisable.

Like most churches, the First Church of God in Cassopolis seeks to serve its home community in good times and troubled times, Foreman said. The church provides a Compassion Cupboard on the fourth Saturday of each month, as well as the Feeding America Food Truck throughout the year.

Due to COVID-19, the church implemented a new method of curb side delivery for last week’s food distribution.

“Whatever it takes, the church is committed to provide the food cupboard as well as other needed services right through this long crisis season,” Foreman said.
