NILES — Niah Zavitz, a senior at Niles High School, has signed a national letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at Lake Michigan College.

Zavitz will play softball for the Red Hawks.

“I was able to continue my softball career,” she said about why she selected Lake Michigan College.

Zavitz said she was also looking at Michigan State, Western Michigan University and Indiana University – South Bend. She plans on studying nursing.

Zavitz, like every other athlete in Michigan, is waiting to see if the government allows schools to reopen, or at least lift the stay-at-home order, as the country and the world continue to battle the COVID-19 outbreak.

The stay-at-home order, as well as the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s suspension of sports continues through at least April 13.

She continues to try to stay prepared in case sports resume.

“During the coronavirus quarantine, I’m stretching, pitching and playing catch in our back yard with my dad,” Zavitz said. “Before that, I was attending the Dugout Dolls for pitching and hitting coaching.”
