ONTWA TOWNSHIP — The Ontwa Township Board of Trustees unanimously passed a road projects proposal for $208,000 Thursday.
The projects will be funded by a possible school grant of $200,000. The grant can be received by any of the Edwardsburg Public Schools, excluding the high school.
“That’s one of the things we’re really looking at in moving forward on this, which would give us lighting and sidewalks and whole number of things,” said supervisor Jerry Marchetti. “I think we have some real opportunity here. It’s not going to happen overnight.”
Board Trustee Jeff Kozinski said he is talks with Joesph Bellina, III, chief engineer of the Cass County Road Commission, about the roads. Some of the roads that were recommended for repair include Beech Drive, Twilight Street, Sunset Street, Morton Dr. and Southshore Drive.
“We do have other roads that are in need,” Kozinski said. “But we just can’t do them all.”
The board also revealed upcoming plans to make improvements to Krause Park in Edwardsburg. The board budgeted $20,000 towards repairs such as replacing the wooden tables under the canopy with five new tables. Other small repairs include repainting and new mulch.
“Last year at this time, we talked about spending some money in terms of renovation on the park,” Marchetti said. “We budgeted a grand total of $35,000 to that. So, early in the year, we did some minor repairs on it.”
The board anticipated receiving a grant that would cover part of the $35,000 budget. Because it did not get the grant, members revised the budget to $20,000.
Marchetti said the board received a grant of $4,000 to replace the mulch in the playground area. The board is looking to find more funding to build a blockade to keep the mulch in.
