NILES — Leader Publications has welcomed a new addition to its news team.

Christina Clark, of Mishawaka, has joined Leader Publications as a news reporter. She will be primarily working in the Niles region.

Born across state lines in South Bend, Clark earned a bachelor of arts degree in communication studies, focusing on journalism and minoring in photojournalism, from Indiana University South Bend in May 2019. During her time at IUSB, she served as the editor in chief of the student newspaper, The Preface. Most recently, she has worked as a contributing writer for NDWorks at the University of Notre Dame and The Goshen News.

“Ever since I can remember, I loved reading the newspaper. It began as reading the comics as a little kid, but as I got older, more of the seconds came to my attention. I love knowing what is going on around me, and going to the source to let others know now as well,” Clark said of her passion for journalism.

Before beginning her reporting career as a non-traditional student at the age of 24, Clark worked as a licensed esthetician and makeup artist for nearly 11 years. It was in that line of work that she said she learned to open up and learn the interview skills necessary to become a reporter.

“After pursuing another career for years, I realized that I missed research and writing,” she said. “When I returned to college to work on my communication studies degree, I joined the student newspaper by the end of my first semester and fell in love with it. When asked to declare my major, the advisor suggested I start with journalism. It has been the happiest accident for me.”

Now that she is in a staff position at a community newspaper, Clark said she is ready to put her communications skills to the test by getting to know the southwest Michigan area and sharing local news.

“National news is important, but knowing what is going on right at home is vital,” she said. “Business, education, entertainment, legislative and breaking news events are all more impactful when they’re happening right down the street or the next town over. Getting to know what is happening in our own backyards helps us create a community we are proud of.”

Managing editor Sarah Culton said she believes Clark’s experience and professionalism will make her a valuable addition to the Leader Publications news team.

“Christina has an enthusiasm for local news that makes her the perfect fit,” Culton said. “We are grateful to have her here and know that she will be able to tell Niles’ stories with creativity and competence.”

As she settles into her new role, Clark said she is excited to begin reporting on Niles and to meet its residents.

“There are so many things that I am excited about as a new reporter with Leader Publications,” Clark said. “Having my own desk, working with an experienced news staff every day, and also having a daily adventure around the area. There are new stories happening every day around us, and I am looking forward to writing them for you.”
