NILES — The waiting is over.

The Niles girls basketball team found out Monday night who its opponent would be in the Division 2 district semifinals. The Vikings will face Three Rivers, which defeated district host Buchanan 53=25, Monday night.

The Vikings (11-9) will play the Wildcats (18-3) in the first semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

In the other half of the bracket, defending district champion Edwardsburg (20-1) blew out Dowagiac (2-18) in the other opening-round game and face Berrien Springs at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

The championship game is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

Niles will be led into the postseason by senior point guard Alycia Patterson, who last Friday night became the Vikings’ all-time leading scorer with 1,207 points. She surpassed Sarah Dreher Workman, who had 1,205 points during her four-year career at Niles, which ended in 2005.

Patterson is averaging 18.3 points per game to go along with 3.7 rebounds, 4.8 steals and 3.3 assists.

If the Vikings are going to advance to the championship game, junior Amara Palmer will have to contribute in a big way. Palmer averaged 11.6 points per game, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 4.2 assists during the regular season.

“Defense,” said Niles coach Jessica Johnson when asked what it will take to be successful in the district tournament. “Our biggest challenge will be putting together a solid 32 minutes.”

Johnson believes that Edwardsburg and Three Rivers are the teams to beat at Buchanan this week.

Admission is $6 per person. No passes will be accepted per Michigan State High School Athletic Association rule.
