Passenger injured in Howard Township crash

HOWARD TOWNSHIP — A teenager police say was distracted while driving was injured in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies responded to a crash at the intersection of Barron Lake Road and Terminal streets at 3:13 p.m. Monday. They learned that a 16-year-old Niles driver was preparing to turn at the stop sign, north onto Barron Lake Road. Distracted by a cell phone call, the teen failed to yield to a southbound vehicle driven by Timothy Karns, 55, of Niles.

Karns struck the teenager’s vehicle on the driver’s side. Both vehicles’ airbags deployed.

Laurie Bender, 40, of Niles, was the passenger in Karns’ vehicle. She sustained minor injuries and was transported to Lakeland Hospital in Niles by SMCAS Ambulance.

All parties involved were wearing seatbelts.

The Howard Township Fire Department assisted the sheriff’s office with traffic at the crash location.
