BUCHANAN — Michigan Gateway Community Foundation, serving south Berrien and Cass counties, has received a new gift to be used solely to further the education of children and adult residents of the Buchanan Community School District.

“We are happy to be able to assist our area scholars as they pursue their higher education goals.” said Robert N. Habicht, president and CEO of Michigan Gateway Community Foundation.

The foundation’s scholarship grants are available through 47 different non-endowed gifts and a variety of permanently endowed funds created by generous donors who care for young people and their futures. Each year, the income from each of these funds is used to provide scholarship payments covering tuition, books and fees directly to the students’ college or university. The newest scholarship, the Carol D. Baker Memorial Scholarship, honors the memory of Carol D. Baker, who was born and raised in Buchanan, graduated from University of Michigan, earned her master’s degree in child psychology and taught primary grades for 37 years in the South Lyon, Michigan school district. She died in May 2019.

Graduating seniors from Buchanan High School and adults living within the Buchanan Community School District boundaries are eligible to apply for the scholarship starting in the school year, which commences in September.  BHS seniors in that year will be able to apply for this and 20 other Buchanan related scholarships via the regular online application process for high school students. Adult learners who desire to return to school for further education or certification that will lead to new employment opportunities or improve their existing career status should contact the foundation for information on applying.
