DOWAGIAC — The accolades keep coming for the Dowagiac girls golf team.
Veteran Dowagiac coach Bob Turner recently received notice that he has been selected as one of six Division 3 Regional Coaches of the Year by the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association.
Turner led the Chieftains to the Wolverine Conference South Division championship last fall, and the runner-up finish at the league tournament.
Turner also coached senior Greta Whitaker, who became the first Dowagiac player to compete in the state golf finals.
The Chieftains also earned Division 3 Academic All-State for the fourth consecutive season.
“It is more about the girls than it is me,” Turner said. “If the girls are doing the right things, that is what gets noticed. They get good grades, they do the right things, and they present themselves as a team well. It makes me look good.”
Turner said that winning the award also helps the Dowagiac program.
“People hear about it, so hopefully, it will help get more kids out.”
