Four Flags Plaza floods

NILES — Flooding at Four Flags Plaza Apartments caused by human error forced some first-floor residents out of their apartments Wednesday morning.
Now, residents are back in their homes and dehumidifiers are drying up remnant moisture, said Mary Kannenburg, manager of the senior apartment complex.
Around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, Four Flags Plaza’s fire protection system broke during renovations. The Niles Fire Department was called to the scene to stop flooding and help residents.
The power was temporarily shut off to minimize the risk of water coming in contact with electricity, said Fire Chief Larry Lamb.
Niles Dial-a-Ride Transportation was called so uprooted residents could have a bus to sit in while repairs were underway. Southwest Michigan Community Ambulance Services was called to the scene in case of injury.
The fire department departed the scene around noon. Damage to the complex was minimal, officials said.
“Any time you have a building this size, and the folks that are in there are less ambulatory, obviously, we have concerns with that,” Lamb said. “We tried to do everything we could. We worked hard.”
Lamb also noted the hard work of the complex’s maintenance crew.
“They worked very hard to get everything back on, and they can be commended,” he said.
