DOWAGIAC — The wait finally came to an end Friday night.

The wait for the Dowagiac boys basketball team to put it all together for 32 minutes.

The Chieftains played well in all phases of the game in handing visiting Sturgis a 67-28 Wolverine Conference South Division loss Thursday night.

Unfortunately for Dowagiac, it could not duplicate the effort less than 24 hours later as it lost to Grand Rapids Uion 75-31 at the Paul Wilhite Classic at Benton Harbor Friday night.

Dowagiac outscored the Trojans 19-0 in the first quarter and led 23-0 with 5:29 to go in the first half, when Sturgis finally got a shot to fall.

The Chieftains (2-2, 1-0 Wolverine South) would go on to lead 32-8 at halftime.

Things did not improve for the Trojans in the second half as the Chieftains continued to share the ball well on offense and hustle at the defensive end of the court.

Dowagiac also hit the board and rebounded well against Sturgis, which played without top player Thomas Kurkowski, who was sick.

Dashawn Brooks and De’Ondray Henry both scored 11 points to lead the Chieftains, which played the entire roster in the contest.

D.J. Laner, Stewart Smith and Michael Smith all added eight points.

Against Grand Rapids, Dowagiac trailed just 12-6 after one quarter, but was outscored 18-7 in the second quarter as Union opened up a 30-13 halftime advantage.

Grand Rapids took a 43-23 lead into the final quarter.

Lanier led Dowagiac with 10 points. Cailyn Murphy added nine points.

The Dowagiac girls basketball team scored just two points in the opening quarter and fell to visiting Sturgis 37-20.

The loss dropped Dowagiac to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in South Division play.

“This year, we have struggled to get off to a fast start,” said Dowagiac coach Jason Turner. “We wanted to come out tonight fast and jump on them. We didn’t do that, and that was the difference in the game. We have got to continue to work and fight this year. Our offense needs to start with our defense.”

Hayden First led Dowagiac with eight points. Allie Conner added four points.

Taylor Hopkinsj had 11 points to lead the Trojans, who improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the South Division.
