DECATUR — Junior Hunter Heath has been around the sport of wrestling since he was little. His father, Dean Heath’s involvement in the sport at Brandywine High School is what got him hooked.

It was only fitting that the man who introduced him to the sport was also the first one to give his son a hug and a banner after his 100th career victory.

Heath defeated regional qualifier, Garret Lobe of Union City, at 145 pounds with a pin in the second period, helping to earn his team a close 39-33 victory over the Chargers.

Brandywine also defeated Lawrence High School 60-14 later on in the night.

“It felt good and all the hard work I’ve put in this year,” Heath said of his career mark. “It made it feel good to get my 100th win finally.”

Before the match, Heath said he felt nervous. The nerves faded once he stepped foot on the mat and got into his groove.

“I worked on the stuff that I am best at,” he said.

Head coach Rex Pomranka was impressed with Hunter’s win over Lobe. Lobe later went on to beat a returning state placer out of Decatur.

“That kid was tough,” Pomranka said. “That was a good match for him and getting his 100th, getting that off his shoulders and moving on.”

Heath’s younger brother Drake, a freshman on the Bobcats wrestling team, finished the night with two victories. Drake pinned Andrew Smith of Union City in 5:29 at 112 pounds.

The win allowed Brandywine to take the lead in the match. Heath won by forfeit at 103 against Lawrence.

“Watching him wrestle makes me kind of nervous, too,” Heath said with a laugh. “I was hype for that win, but seeing him out there makes me sometimes way more nervous.”

Overall, Pomranka was happy with his team’s performance despite some matches not going their way.

“The kids stepped it up in the end and beat them,” he said. “I was hoping to wrestle Decatur, but we wrestled Lawrence. It was good to come out with two wins.”

Pomranka was impressed with Gage Hoskins’ performance against Jacob Edson of Lawrence, who is a returning state qualifier. Hoskins pinned Edson at 3:36 at 152 pounds.

“That was a big win for him,” Pomranka said. “He is getting more confidence every time we have a match.”

Improving to a 6-3 record, Pamranka said the Bobcats are gaining the momentum needed in order to continue to improve each match.

As Heath walked off the mat with his family and 100th career victory banner, he said he has end of the year aspirations already on his mind — including placing top four at states.

“This year we are division three, not division four,” Heath said. “So, this year, it’s a little bit harder, but I’m still aiming for top four.”

Brandywine will look to improve this Saturday at a 16-team tournament at Gull Lake, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The remainder of the Bobcats will compete at an individual tournament in Eau Claire scheduled for 9 a.m.
