NILES — When Dick Remington had a heart attack in the Niles Post Office library on Oct. 2, emergency room staff behind him in line and first responders kept him alive. On Nov. 3, those responders were recognized by the post office with a first responders stamp presentation at the Niles Police Department, 1600 Silverbrook Ave.

Debra Denai, postmaster for Niles and Buchanan, honored the following city employees: City Administrator Ric Huff, Police Chief James Millen, Captain Kevin Kosten, Sergeant Scott Swanson, officer Matthew Nolan, dispatcher Amanda Kowalk, dispatcher Doris Horton and Fire Chief Larry Lamb.

The following first responders were also recognized: Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Services members Jim Kalinowski and Kayly Probst; and emergency medical technicians Taner Dalenberg and Justin Iwaniuk.

The stamps presented were Honoring First Responders Forever stamps, released by the U.S. Postal Service in September 2018.
