Roundup: Bobcats, Rangers and Eddies open with wins

NILES — The 2019-20 girls basketball season got under way with a full slate of games Tuesday night.
Host Brandywine routed Coloma 53-33 in the Bobcat Den, while host Niles dropped a 54-43 decision to Three Rivers out of the Wolverine Conference.
Meanwhile, over in Cass County, Cassopolis pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Dowagiac 43-30.
Edwardsburg opened its season on the road with a bit win over perennial Division 3 powerhouse Schoolcraft, 43-31.
Coloma at Brandywine
The Bobcats (1-0) outscored Coloma 20-5 in the first quarter and was never really threatened after that.
Brandywine did struggle offensively in the second quarter, as it managed just six points, but the Bobcats still led 26-13 at the intermission. The Comets (0-1) cut into the lead even further in the third quarter, outscoring the home team 15-10 to make it 36-28 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Brandywine regrouped, and outscored Coloma 17-5 to earn the win.
Alexis Rhodes led the Bobcats with 13 points, while Malikiyyah Abdullah and Zakiyyah Abdullah finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Megan Koenigshof led the Comets with a game-high 15 points.
Three Rivers at Niles
Visiting Three Rivers had a trio of players in double figures against the Vikings Tuesday night.
Led by Kali Heivilin’s 13 points, the Wildcats were able to turn a 23-21 halftime advantage into an 11-point victory by outscoring Niles (0-1) 33-20 in the second half.
Reese Davies led the Vikings with 11 points. Alycia Patterson added nine points and Amara Palmer eight.
Dowagiac at Cassopolis
Visiting Dowagiac was unable to stop Cassopolis point guard Angel Gary, who scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Rangers to the season-opening victory.
Leading 24-19 at halftime, Cassopolis (1-0) pulled away in the final 16 minutes, outscoring the Chieftains 19-11.
Jadin Wolfe added 10 points for the Rangers.
Dowagiac (0-1) was led by Hayden First’s 10 points. Allie Conner added seven points.
Edwardsburg at Schoolcraft
Playing its first game without all-time leading scorer Kaitlyn Zarycki was no problem for visiting Edwardsburg Tuesday night.
The Eddies (1-0) were able to slowly pull away from the Eagles throughout the contest and ended up with an 11-point advantage by the game’s end.
Edwardsburg led 11-10 after one quarter, 22-19 at halftime and 31-26 heading into the final quarter.
Abbey Krugh scored a team-high 12 points for the Eddies, who also got 10 points from Macy Laubach and nine points from Claire Bartz.
Mackenzie Miller had a game-high 17 points for Schoolcraft.
