Chieftains still on a roll after sweep

DOWAGIAC — To say the Dowagiac volleyball team is on a bit of a roll would be an understatement.

The Chieftains are coming off a victory at the St. Joseph Invitational on Saturday, where they defeated area powerhouses Niles and the host Bears in the semifinals and finals.

Dowagiac followed that up with a sweep of Marcellus, Buchanan and Brandywine at its regular-season home finale Monday night.

The Chieftains’ current success has left them with a 25-16-4 overall record heading to Coloma Wednesday night for its final regular-season match. Dowagiac will open up Division 2 district play at Buchanan against Niles on Monday night.

Dowagiac coach Tony Hooley is hoping his team can carry the momentum it has built into Coloma and then into the postseason.

The Chieftains got off to a bit of a slow start this season. They have had some highs and lows, but never quit working hard. That work ethic has translated into a late-season run that has Dowagiac on the verge of bettering its 25 wins from last season, which was Hooley’s first.

“With these wins, we have matched last year’s win total with only one more loss while playing a tougher schedule,” he said. “I dropped three tournaments we won last year, but I think we are playing stronger down the stretch.”

Monday night, Dowagiac defeated Hooley’s former team, Marcellus, 25-21 and 25-16. The Chieftains then swept district host Buchanan 25-20 and 25-10.

In the final match of the night, Dowagiac needed three sets, but defeated Brandywine 25-22, 19-25 and 15-7.

Hooley said that his team did not play as well as it did on Saturday, but came up with the big points when they needed them.

“Another good night for the volleyball program,” he said. “We might not have played as crisp as we did Saturday, but the ladies won out, so we’ll take it. I think there are some lingering illness, fatigue and nagging injury pains, but they are plowing through and staying competitive.”

Sophomore Riley Stack had a big night at the net for the Chieftains as she finished with 25 kills. Senior Jenna Davis led the team in kills with 27 and blocks with four, while senior Nicole Whan had 11 kills, six aces and 51 assists.

Jessie Hulett led the team in digs with 19.
