Little wins back-to-back regional championships

CENTREVILLE — Senior Shawn Little successfully defended his Division 2 cross country regional championship on Saturday.
Little, who won the 2018 regional title with a time of 16:03 at Glen Oaks Community College in Centreville, posted a time of 16:27 on the same course Saturday.
He will be joined by teammate Cole Parker, who finished 13th overall with a time of 17:20.
Edwardsburg’s Jack Leman and Niles’ Adam Shepherd were also area qualifiers after placing 11th and 14th overall with times of 17:14 and 17:26, respectively. Leman and Shepherd were both state qualifiers last year.
The Division 2 state finals will be hosted Nov. 2 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
“Super pumped for the state finals,” said first-year Dowagiac coach Maria Kulka. “The cross country team had a great season this year. I am looking forward to the next. Shawn getting first place at regionals this year is huge because our region is one of the most competitive in the state.”
Dowagiac also had three runners set new personal records. Alessandra Zaghetti, the lone female runner, posted a tine of 28:03. William Leonard and Jonathan Phillips ran 20:22 and 21:35 respectively.
In the Division 2 girls race, Niles’ Kaylee Thompson was a repeat state qualifier, as she finished eighth overall with a time of 20:16.
In Division 4, Cassopolis’ Cole Millirans and Lauren Anderson both won regional championships at Portage Northern.
Millirans, a freshman, posted a time of 17:24, while Anderson, who also qualified last year as a freshman, ran a time of 20:49.
Buchanan’s Walker Barz and Kelsey Brown were both state qualifiers in Division 3 at Centreville.
