SOUTH HAVEN — Mark down Dowagiac’s come-from-behind 2-1 Wolverine Conference win over host South Haven Monday night as a significant victory with the state tournament beginning next week.
The Chieftains, who received the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Division 3 soccer district at Coloma, defeated No. 1 seed, South Haven, as Ben McCrorey scored both goals in the second half as the Chieftains erased a 1-0 halftime deficit.
“It was a good win, down 1-0 and came back to win 2-1 in the second half,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Williams. “We began to attack as a team and take shots. Ben McCrorey scored two nice goals from outside the 18. The No. 2 seed gets the bye this year in a seven-team district. We have eight, so no one gets the bye. That makes the No. 2 seed the top team. Crazy way of doing things.”
Brian Calderon scored the lone goal for the Rams.
The Chieftains (14-4, 4-3 Wolverine) outshot South Haven 13-4.
The Chieftains will host Brandywine, which it defeated 8-0 early this year, in the opening round match on Oct. 9. The winner advances to face the winner of the Buchanan at Berrien Springs match, which will be Oct. 10.
Dowagiac and the winner of the Bucks and Shamrocks match, will play on Oct. 14.
The Chieftains will wrap up the regular season by hosting Paw Paw today at 5:30 p.m. and then hosting Berrien Springs at 5 p.m. on Monday.
