NILES — Brandywine’s Shane Brown and Gabe Gouin were the first ones to the field before the Bobcats took on Saugatuck in the pair’s second meeting.
Brown was also the first one to run full speed off the field with his helmet in hand and a Brandywine school record after a Brandywine 45-10 victory over Saugatuck.
After his Friday night performance, Brown is the all-time leader receiver in touchdowns after catching a 68-yard scoring pass from Gouin.
It gave the Bobcats the lead just 1:10 into the game.
“I was nervous when [Gouin] first called the play,” Brown said. “I knew I was going to make the grab. When I made the grab, I just pointed up to the sky and celebrated with my guys.”
The mark Brown broke was set by Austin Knapp in 2015.
“I can spend it with my team, without them, it wouldn’t be possible,” Brown said. “The line, offense, defense — all of it. Knapp was a great wide receiver, and [I’m] just happy I could beat it.”
Head coach Mike Nate said Brown’s touchdown catch set the tone for Brandywine’s play the rest of the game.
“[Brown] is a great ballplayer,” Nate said. “He deserves that record. There’s been a lot of good receivers here at Brandywine over the last 60 years. He’s right up there towards the top of the list.”
With 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Gouin ran the ball in for a one-yard touchdown to secure a lead over Saugatuck.
In the second quarter, Jordan Abrams scored two touchdowns, the first for 17 yards and another for 13 yards, to extend the Bobcats’ advantage.
Saugatuck made it on the board after Griffin Milovanski connected on a 24-yard field goal attempt.
The third quarter sealed Brandywine’s win after Jakob Luczkowski intercepted Saugatuck quarterback Kieran Boerema’s attempted pass to Tommy Beckman. The Bobcats’ Luczkowski ran the ball in for a 30-yard touchdown.
Saugatuck scored its only touchdown of the night with six minutes remaining in the third quarter when Ben Drew carried the ball for a two-yard touchdown.
Brandywine was the last to get on the board when Brock Prenkert ran for a four-yard score.
In the fourth quarter, Brown stepped on the field as the quarterback to give Gouin a break. Brown had a 16-yard carry and several handoffs to waste time on the clock as Brandywine improved its 3-0 season record, which has not been achieved by the Bobcats since 2014. Beating Saugatuck was vital, as Brandywine fell to Saugatuck 48-12 last year in the two team’s first ever meeting.
“It was nice to return the favor,” Nate said. “We got the victory tonight, and we are happy about that.”
Before he even stepped on the field Friday night, Brown knew it had to be a win.
“We had to come out and win,” Brown said. “We had to become 3-0.”
With another game behind him, Brown is looking to make even more history at Brandywine as part of the first football team to win a playoff game.
As Brown continues to run the routes, he will be looking for passes from Gouin, who was 3-for-4 against Saugatuck.
“Gabe and I, we always text and on the field, we goof around,” Brown said. “We just work on the routes and timing. That’s just my guy.”
