Balanced attack leads Chieftains to easy victory

ALLEGAN — Creating balance in an offense can pay huge dividends.
Visiting Dowagiac showed its ability to not only run the football, but throw it as well in a 46-0 Wolverine Conference victory over Allegan Friday night.
The Chieftains (2-1) ran for 311 yards and threw for another 122 as it outgained the Tigers 433 to 82.
Senior quarterback Cailyn Murphy was 6-of-8 for 122 yards and a touchdown, while senior D.J. Lanier rushed for 125 yards on five carries, which included a 90-yard touchdown run which capped the scoring.
The Chieftains also got 85 yards rushing and a pair of scores from De’Ondray Henry. Murphy added 55 yards and two touchdowns to his totals.
David Collier caught three of passes for 67 yards.
Murphy scored on runs of 35 and six yards, while Henry scored on runs of 62 and 21 yards. Henry returned the second-half opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown.
Reed caught Murphy’s 10-yard touchdown pass.
On defense, Dowagiac was led by Lamberto Paredes who had nine tackles. Luke Staten had five tackles, while T.J. Reed intercepted a pass and Hunter Williamson recovered a fumble.
The Chieftains return home to host Paw Paw in a key Wolverine Conference clash.
