Chieftains defeat host Vicksburg in Wolverine Conference action

VICKSBURG — The No. 13-ranked Dowagiac soccer team opened up Wolverine Conference play with a 3-1 win over host Vicksburg Wednesday.
The Chieftains (8-1, 1-0 Wolverine) grabbed a 2-1 halftime lead on the Bulldogs with goals by Henry Weller in the second minute and Cristian Wilson in the 11th minute. Weller assisted on the Wilson goal.
In the second half, Isaac Saavedra gave Dowagiac an insurance goal in the 36th minute.
“We put a lot of shots on the goal and did a nice job on offensive runs,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Williams. “Vicksburg did a good job of keeping pressure on us throughout the game.”
The Chieftains outshot Vicksburg 16-4.
Dowagiac is back in action Saturday as it hosts the annual Chieftain Invitational.
The Chieftains will face a pair of Southwest 10 Conference schools in the round-robin tournament in Bangor to 9 a.m. and Cassopolis at noon.
Dowagiac will take on Lawton out of the Southwest Athletic Conference at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Dowagiac will play those games on its game field. On the auxiliary field across the street, Lawton will take on Cassopolis at 9 a.m., before the Rangers face Southwest 10 foe Bangor at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Bangor and Lawton will wrap up play on Field 2 at noon.
Admission is $5 per person.
Cassopolis 5, Bangor 3
CASSOPOLIS — The host Rangers successfully opened its Southwest 10 Conference season with a 5-3 win over Bangor Wednesday.
Cassopolis (3-1, 1-0 Southwest 10) trailed the Vikings 3-2 at halftime as Jonathan Nieva scored three goals.
The Rangers got goals from Brett Williams, the first of his three, and Cole Millirans, who got an assist from Buster Ward.
In the final 40 minutes, Williams scored a pair of goals, and Todd Bussey capped the scoring.
Cassopolis outshot Bangor 21-14.
Buchanan 3, Brandywine 0
BUCHANAN — Jake Robles scored a pair of goals as host Buchanan blanked Brandywine 3-0 in BCS Athletic Conference play Wednesday.
Despite losing to the Bucks, the Bobcats outshot them 8-5.
Allegan 3, Edwardsburg 2
ALLEGAN — Anthony Castelluci scored a pair of goals in a losing effort as the Tigers edged the Eddies 3-2 in the Wolverine Conference opener for both schools.
Tyler Dahms and Nathan Bessinger picked up assists for Edwardsburg.
Gull Lake 8, Niles 0
RICHLAND — Drew Gourlay had 12 saves as visiting Niles dropped an 8-0 decision to Gull Lake in SMAC action Wednesday night.
