STURGIS — The Wolverine Conference South Division golf race got a lot closer at Klinger Lake Tuesday afternoon.
Host Sturgis snapped Dowagiac’s winning streak in conference jamborees to pull within a point of the Chieftains in the overall South Division standings.
After winning the first two jamborees Dowagiac had opened up a 10-5 lead on the Trojans. Sturgis rebounded by defending its home course by shooting 209.
The Chieftains finished with a 213. Three Rivers was a shot back at 214, while Vicksburg finished with a 256.
Edwardsburg, which is in its first season of girls golf, finished fifth with a 264.
“Other than Greta, everyone had a bit of an off night,” said Dowagiac coach Bob Turner. “Greta has worked hard and is having a really good year. We are looking forward to getting in some practice days and bringing our scores back down next week when we play Michigan Lutheran at home and then go to Three Rivers for the next conference South jamboree.”
Carli Sanford led Sturgis with a 43, which earned her medalist honors.
Dowagiac was led by Greta Whitaker’s 44. Ashley Low again led the Eddies as she shot 61.
The Chieftains led the Trojans 14-13 as the conference shifts to Three Rivers on Sept. 12.
