NILES — Chamber Dog Days was hosted last Saturday, but. despite its title, the weather was not hot and humid, but cool and cloudy.

The community dog-centric event went from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ruff & Tumble Dog Park in Niles, just off of Bond Street.

Dogs frolicked in the fenced-off park. Dog owners loved-up their dogs and dog enthusiasts learned about adoption opportunities and training classes.

The event was hosted by Greater Niles Chamber of Commerce, Ruff & Tumble Dog Park and SNAP of Michigan, a spay and neuter assistance program and pet shelter.

SNAP brought two of its dogs up for adoption to the event: Candy, a boxer, and Oakley, a pooch of an undetermined breed but called “a tank” by staff.

Other features of the event included a pet photographer, grooming demonstrations, training class sign-ups, food from Jimmy Johns in Niles and a nail artist.

Kathryn Humphrey, a staff member at Greater Niles Chamber of Commerce, said the event was meant to celebrate dogs, their owners and Ruff & Tumble Dog Park while also promoting each hosting organization.

Attendees Amanda and Brian Wilcox attended because they love the park. Their Great Dane, Henrick the Two-Hearted, and Spinone Italiano, Bruno, love to play in its open space, they said.

“We just love this park,” Amanda said.

The event came three days after Ruff & Tumble received a $3,500 grant from the Southwest Michigan Association of Realtors’ public relations committee.

The money will go toward educational and aesthetic improvements, dog park founder Katrina Andrews said.
