NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — Its mission is in its name. Roberts Service Company exists to service its Michiana customers. In September, it will celebrate 50 years of doing so.
The family-run company designs, engineers and installs heating, venting and air conditioning, or HVAC, units and offers plumbing services from its 1445 S. Third St. location.
Many of its products are energy efficient, which sets it aside from other plumbing and HVAC companies, said president and owner Scott Roberts. Those products are better for both the pocketbook and the planet.
“I always focused on solutions that meet our customers’ needs outside of the box,” he said. “There’s a lot of contractors that just offer forced air conditioners that aren’t always the best solution to the customer.”
Fifty years ago,t he company had its roots in family, as it does now.
Roberts’ mother and father began the business in 1969 from their basement. Roberts took over in 1997. Tracey Reichanadter Roberts, who is married to Scott Roberts, joined two years ago as vice president and co-owner, bringing more than 15 years of operational and business advisory experience with her.
While company did not start by servicing energy efficient machines by today’s standards, it grew to do so.
“My father started as a master plumber and focused mainly on the plumbing aspect of the business, which included working on boilers,” Roberts said. “That blossomed into working on all types of heating and air conditionings over the years.”
Now, the company employs seven people and provides a number of services that its owners think are best for their customers.
“We try to provide personal experiences to our visitors but also services that are tailored to their needs,” Roberts said.
That leads them to enter into areas of their industry that other companies do not, Reichanadter Roberts said.
“We are primarily a service business first, which leads into retrofit and replacement on both the plumbing and HVAC side,” Roberts said. “Areas that we specialize in that others don’t are geothermal heating and cooling; oil furnaces and boilers; radiant floor heat; and small ductile velocities.”
“He geeks out on the science all the time,” Reichanadter Roberts added.
The Roberts Services Company team also tries to reach out into the community they serve.
Roberts is the former president of the Niles Burn Run, and both he and Reichanadter Roberts are still active with it.
The Burn Run raises money to send children to a Jackson, Michigan-area camp for burn survivors.
The company also supports the Brian Parker Memorial Foundation, which provides monetary support and resources to those diagnosed with cancer.
During summer months, the company sponsors several baseball and softball leagues in the area. The couple’s children are part of some.
“We’re very lucky to have the close relationship with our community that we have, and it’s a nice experience to have,” Roberts said. “We’ve enjoyed that over all of these years.”
Roberts Service Company staff do not have any set plans to celebrate their business’ milestone, but its president and vice president said they plan to continue to provide the personal and professional relationships they have created with clients, philanthropies and other businesses over the years.
Its workforce could also expand soon. So, too, could its marketing campaigns, Reichanadter Roberts said.
The owners also plan to keep their company in the family.
“We’ve always been an intergenerational business,” Reichanadter Roberts said. “Our 2-year-old son thinks he can perform better than us and plans to take over.”
