YMCA instructors to teach free fitness programs July 13

NILES — On Saturday, July 13, people will have the opportunity to groove at a Zumba class, work it at a WERQ class or show off their strength at a Boot Camp class for free.

The Niles-Buchanan YMCA’s annual Day in the Park event will provide free 20-minute YMCA fitness classes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverfront Park’s amphitheater in Niles.

The event is co-hosted by the YMCA and LifePlan, a nonprofit that offers pro-childbirth assistance to pregnant people. LifePlan’s free event, LifeFest, will take place in the park on the same day and coincides with the YMCA event.

Tiffany Rusher, YMCA director of group fitness, said the six free fitness programs to be offered can be completed by people of most ages and abilities.

“We do some of these things in the elementary schools,” she said. “So, kids can do it. The older population, we have them in our classes, too.”

The programs’ movements and routines are adaptable, she said. The fitness instructor does not need to be followed move for move.

“We have older ladies that even take the higher-intensity classes, like Boot Camp,” she said. “They just modify.”

Rusher gave an example: instead of doing a burpee, where one jumps in the air then goes into a pushup, someone can reach down and try to touch their toes while standing or sitting.

Accessibility extends past physical ability and age, too. The free program is meant for people of all income brackets, she said. The Niles YMCA location offers more than 100 fitness classes, but a membership or a $60 fitness class punch card is needed.

Some people, Rusher said, cannot afford those costs.

“It gives those people the opportunity to enjoy those classes, get fit for free and also just that sense of community and family that people receive when they do fitness classes,” she said. “It’s awesome to be able to give back.”

Only one Day in the Park fitness program, Pound, uses equipment, but even Pound can be used without it, Rusher said. Attendees can go home knowing exercise routines that do not require additional purchases.

Those wanting to take part in group fitness activities after taking part in a Day in the Park session can do so. Aside from buying a YMCA membership or a 10-punch fitness program card, prospective exercisers can attend the three free weekly exercise programs offered at the Riverfront Park amphitheater each week.

Day in the Park will have additional opportunities for exercise and fun outside of fitness classes, Rusher said. Water games, carnival games, bounce houses, a petting zoo and food will all be offered for free in coordination with LifePlan’s LifeFest.

No registration is required for either event. All attendees need to do is bring active wear, she said.
