CASSOPOLIS — Those looking to have some fun will now have the chance with Pioneer Days coming to Cassopolis at the end of the month.
Pioneer Days is a daylong event hosted by Cassopolis Main Street Committee with many events happening for the entire family. It will take place starting at 11 a.m. June 29 at 117 S. Broadway St., Cassopolis.
“Pioneer Days is a festival in Cassopolis that we have been having for about five summers. It’s always the last weekend in June,” said Ben Anderson, president of the Cassopolis Main Street Committee. “The Main Street Committee hosts the festival on Saturday, and the Log Cabin Museum has an event on Sunday. However, the Log Cabin Museum is open for tours both days.” Anderson said there are a variety of activities planned.
“At our festival Saturday, we will begin the day in downtown Cassopolis at 11 a.m. with the very popular kids zone, with around eight different bounce houses, face painting, snow cones, a magician, a dunk-a-cop dunk tank, music and a talent competition. The kids zone is free and will be located behind the Cassopolis Village Hall.”
Some of the events that are included in Pioneer Days include:
• Free kids zone, which includes bounce houses, a rock climbing wall and a dunk-a-cop dunk tank
• Beer garden, which will be located behind the Twirl
• Live Music from Sammy Melchi’s Generations Band
• Fifth annual Ranger Run/Walk at Sam Adams Elementary. Awards will be given for top three in each age group, as well as awards and prizes for top female and male.
• Street vendors, and arts and crafts
• Food trucks
• I’m so Cassopolis Talent Competition
• Corn hole tournament
• Log Cabin Museum will be open for tours
“We have a variety of vendors planning to be here this year, like a historical photo booth where people dress up in old clothes and have their picture taken. Urban Street Wear will be selling skate boards, long boards and T-shirts. Baja Gringo Taco will be there again selling their very popular street tacos, along with The Little Red Wagon, which sells hot dogs and chili dogs. The vendors will be in the parking spots downtown so people can walk on the sidewalk to visit them,” Anderson said. “Our beer garden opens at noon this year on Disbrow Street behind The Twirl Restaurant. The beer garden will have keg beer and one of a kind Cassopolis inspired mixed drinks. There will be a corn hole tournament at 1 p.m. and then live music provided from Sammy Melchi’s Generations Band starts at 6 p.m. After 9 p.m., the very popular local DJ, DJ Rountree, will play today’s dance hits until midnight.”
The Lodges of Stone Lake are also hosting the first annual Corn hole tournament during Pioneer Days. It will take place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on S. Disbrow Street in Cassopolis. Tickets for the event will be $25. The contest is open to teams of two with double elimination and only people 18 years of age or older will be able to register. First place will receive $300 and second place will receive $200.
“The State of Michigan does a state wide celebration of historical log cabin homes called ‘Log Cabin Days’ on the last Sunday of June every year,” Anderson said. “Cassopolis has a historical museum called the Pioneer Log Cabin. It was built here in 1923 by the residents of Cass County. The construction of the Log Cabin was done in the spirit of unity and cooperation, and it happened in Cassopolis so the name ‘Pioneer Days’ seemed like a great fit. On Sunday, the Log Cabin Museum will have vendors that will educate and entertain people on the history.”
