Decatur, Nouvel looking for fifth state baseball championship

EAST LANSING — Southwest 10 Conference champion Decatur will be in search of its fifth Michigan High School Athletic Association baseball championship when it faces Saginaw Nouvel in the Division 4 semifinals in East Lansing Friday.

The two will play in the second semifinal at approximately 5 p.m. Petersburg Summerfield will take on Gaylord St. Mary in the first semifinal at 2:30 p.m.

The Raiders (32-6) are ranked No. 5 in Division 4, while the unranked Panthers are 14-16-1.

Decatur last won a state championship in 2012. The Raiders are also a two-time state runner-up.

Nouvel also has won four state titles, the latest in 2005, and has a pair of second-place finishes.

The Raiders are back in the semifinals for the first time since they were the state runner-up in 2014.

Decatur won the district championship with an 8-0 win over conference rival Cassopolis before defeating No. 12-ranked Kalamazoo Christian, No. 14-ranked River Valley and No 18-ranked Colin to advance to Michigan State University.

Nouvel is back in the semifinals for the first time since 2012 when it was in Division 3.

En route to East Lansing, Nouvel defeated defending champion and No. 8-ranked Beal City, No. 11 Marlette and No. 19 Bay City All Saints.

The Raiders have a strong pitching staff led by Jakob Southworth (12-1, 0.93 ERA) and Travis Hunsberger (8-3, 1.47 ERA). The pair are also standouts in the field at first base and in the outfield respectively.

Southworth is hitting .438 with 11 doubles and 27 RBIs, while Hunsberger is hitting .301 with 33 runs scored and 25 RBIs.

Benjamin Cervin and Justin Gale are also standouts for Decatur. Cervin plays second base and is hitting .388 with 11 doubles, 24 RBIs and 28 stolen bases.

Gale, who also pitches, is hitting .410 with 29 runs scored, 13 doubles and 43 RBIs. On the mound, he is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.68.

Justin Osmond, Brady Alverson and Harrison Dwan are the top players for the Panthers.

Osmond is hitting .418 with 25 runs scored and 27 stolen bases, while Alverson is hitting .378 with 24 runs scored, 11 doubles and 27 RBIs. Dwan is hitting .344 with 30 runs scored and 36 stolen bases.

Pitcher Jacob Burr has an ERA of 3.16.
