SOUTH HAVEN — The Division 2 baseball and softball district tournaments barely got started in South Haven before thunderstorms forced a postponement of the games until noon today.
Meanwhile, at Constantine, the Division 3 baseball district title game between Buchanan and Berrien Springs was halted in the bottom of the first inning and will be resumed this afternoon in Berrien Springs due to weather.
Division 2
Dowagiac had just taken a 1-0 lead on the host Rams thanks to an RBI single by Greta Whitaker when thunder and lightning forced a delay of more than an hour.
When the storms did not subside and according to radar would not break up until mid-afternoon, the decision was made to move the tournament to today.
“We got off to a good start,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke. “We got a couple of hits and a timely hit by Greta to get us the lead. We played them the first week back from break and struggled to hit her at all. Now we just have to regroup, refocus and get the job done.”
At baseball, Edwardsburg had to wait an extra 10 minutes to begin its game against Benton Harbor when the Tigers were late arriving.
After a short warmup, the Eddies jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead when the game was suspended.
Division 3
Buchanan (21-8) cruised to a 10-0 victory over host Constantine in the district semifinals.
The Bucks scored two runs in the top of the first and never looked back, adding two runs in the third and fifth innings and then exploding for four runs to end the dame in the sixth via the 10-run rule.
The Falcons hit Dedrick Adkerson to start the game and the Bucks were off and running in the semifinals.
Cam Lorance drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly before Austin Williams singled to make it 2-0 Buchanan.
The Bucks scored twice in the third inning with two outs.
Jacob Hoover and Adkerson both singled home runs as Buchanan extended its advance to 4-0.
In the fifth, Kade Hearington singled home a run, while winning Bucks’ pitcher Brad VanOverberge drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The four-run sixth inning was highlighted by a bases-loaded walk and back-to-back singles from Hearington and VanOverberghe.
Vanoverberghe worked the first five innings, allowing one hit and striking out a pair. Gannon Kutemeier pitched the sixth, also striking out two.
In the championship game, Buchanan scored its run in the top of the first on a single by Vanoverberghe.
Berrien Springs scored on a double by Gabe Shembarger.
The Shamrocks had the bases loaded with one out when the game was suspended.
Play will resume at 4:30 p.m.
