DOWAGIAC — There was little doubt heading into Tuesday’s Division 2 pre-district game about who would win between host Dowagiac and Benton Harbor.
After a 12-run top-half of the first inning for the Chieftains there was no doubt at all.
Dowagiac (16-19) would go on to defeat the Tigers 16-0 to advance to Saturday’s Division 2 district semifinal against host South Haven. Play is set to begin at 10 a.m.
Niles (19-8) will face Lakeshore (27-10) in the other semifinal scheduled for approximately 12:30 p.m. The championship game is set for 2 p.m.
“We came out and did what we had to do against Benton Harbor,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke. “We pitched well, played good defense and hit the ball hard. It was a nice tune-up for Saturday, but the competition will get much tougher on Saturday.”
The Chieftains finished with 12 hits in the contest, including a 3-for-3 performance from Amiyah Smith, who had a pair of triples and drove in three runs.
Jessie Hulett and Maddie Stockwell were both 2-for-2. Stockwell also drove in three runs.
Mona Arana went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, while Emma Allen tripled and drove in three runs.
Sierra Carpenter tossed a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks.
Admission is $6 per person Saturday.
