Laura Odenwald is a volunteer with the city of Dowagiac’s Economic Development and Opportunity Board. She currently resides in Dowagiac.
How long have you been volunteering with the city?
A little over a year. I began serving on the city of Dowagiac’s Economic Development and Opportunity Board in April 2018.
What do you do as a volunteer?
I attend monthly board meetings where we discuss the needs of the community and strategize ways that new and current businesses can meet those demands. We do this in various ways such as: surveying public opinion, working with groups like Kinexus to get a better understanding of workforce development needs, identifying specific businesses and industries that would benefit residents, and partnering with the City to encourage new businesses to come to Dowagiac.
Why did you choose to volunteer with the city?
As a fairly new resident of Dowagiac, I was looking for ways to get involved and meet new people. When the opportunity came to serve of the EDO Board, it seemed like a great fit. I have served on nonprofit and professional boards in the past and always enjoyed it.
What do you enjoy most about your work as a volunteer?
I enjoy using my skill set as a public relations practitioner for the benefit of organizations and causes that I believe in. Giving your time and talent to others is always rewarding.
Why would you encourage other people to get involved with volunteering?
Volunteering is great way to develop relationships and expand your knowledge in new areas. Particularly when it comes to the government, the best way to have your voice heard and make a difference is to simply get involved.
