NOVAK: Tourney time is already here

I find it hard to believe that the state tennis and track postseason has already started.
Soccer fires up its playoffs with district action this week, while the baseball and softball teams wrap up the postseason starting next week.
Where did the spring sports season go?
I know we lost a good portion of it to bad weather. Rain and even snow played a huge role in the number of games our local teams got to play this season.
It is unfortunate that so many games had to be postponed or canceled. We have a lot of good teams and athletes that did not get much of a chance to showcase their talents, but it is what it is and now it is time to focus on the future.
First off, congratulations to Edwardsburg for winning the Division 2 regional tennis championship last week and to Brandywine for its runner-up finish in Division 4.
Both teams will do us proud in the state tournament in just less than two weeks.
Also, congratulations to all our area athletes who qualified for the state track meets that will be contested June 1.
We had a few individual champions and qualifiers from all six of the schools that we cover. I cannot wait to see how they will fare against the rest of the state. To be quite honest, I am not sure we will have a soccer team get past the semifinals of the district tournament.
It seems like all of our area teams have struggled this season, be it against quality competition. I know for sure that in Division 2 we will have a semifinalist as Edwardsburg and Niles square off for the second time this season.
The Eddies won 5-3, but Niles is poised for revenge coming off its win at the VanDenBerg Invitational on Saturday. Beyond that, it does not look good for our teams, but I am holding out hope that someone, or more than one, will surprise me with an upset or two.
Our best chances for a long playoff run come in softball, where nearly all of our teams have had very successful seasons. Softball and baseball will have some very competitive fields at the district level and I cannot wait to see how they play out.
