DOWAGIAC — The 10-game win streak of the Dowagiac softball team came to a screeching halt at the hands of Vicksburg in a Wolverine Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
The visiting Bulldogs (26-0) swept the Chieftains, winning 12-2 and 14-1. Both games lasted just five innings.
“We came crashing down from the high we had been on from winning 10 games in a row,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke. “Vicksburg is a very good team and they exploited our weaknesses tonight. Their pitchers kept us off balance at the plate and we didn’t get much of anything going. They also hit the ball well and made us make plays that we didn’t make. We will work to clean things up to get ready for Sturgis.”
The Chieftains, who have been pounding the ball and averaging more than 10 hits per game during the winning streak, where shut down by Vicksburg pitchers Rylie Richter and Hannah Vallier.
Richter scattered six hits in winning the opening game. She struck out 10 in the contest.
Vallier was even better as she tossed a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks.
Greta Whitaker was 2-for-3 with a home run in the opening game, while Taylor Pye also had a pair of hits.
Mekenna Gaideski had both of Dowagiac’s hits in the nightcap.
The Chieftains travel to face 9-9 Sturgis on Friday. The Trojans were swept by Edwardsburg (7-0 and 4-3) Tuesday.
