NILES – The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Wednesday, May 8

9:30 a.m. — Squealers

This activity is ideal for babies birth to 18 months, this lapsit program for babies and their caregivers features: a fingerplay, song, board book, and 10 minutes of baby play and bubbles.

10 a.m. — Squeakers

This activity is ideal for children ages 18 months to 3 years. This is a transitional story time for children in-between baby and toddler stage.  This will be a short story time with one book, a finger play, and a song.  The activity will end with bubbles. The activity seeks to work on skills like sitting quietly, listening to a story independently, and following directions.

10 a.m. — Cutting the Cable Cord

Sarah will discuss streaming options available for TV shows and movies that could save people money. Class space is limited, so those interested are asked to sign up at the Information Desk, or call (269) 683-8545, ext. 112.

10:30 a.m. — Squigglers

This activity is for children ages 18 months to 5 years. This story time program is structured like the beginning of a preschool class. There will be a calendar, letter of the day, and a color song, with two books and music and movement.

Storytime at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

This activity is for children ages 3 and up. This storytime features three books, a color song, and music and movement.  The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet, and a craft.

1 to 4 p.m. — MI Works!

Michigan Works! will be at the library to assist job seekers every other Wednesday. Talent Development Specialists can help people register for unemployment, evaluate their strengths and skills, edit or help update their resume, sharpen their interview skills and more.

7 p.m. — Happy Destiny Support Group

Open A.A. meetings are available to anyone interested in the program or recovery.

Thursday, May 9

10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

This activity is ideal for children ages 3 and up. This story time features three books, a color song, and music and movement.  The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet, and a craft.

1 to 4:30 p.m. — American Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach people how to play Mahjong.

6 p.m. — Niles Community Garden Sign Up

People can sign up for a garden plot through Niles Community Gardens. This activity is ideal for those dreaming of garden fresh strawberries, asparagus, and tomatoes. This event is open to the public.

6 to 7:30 p.m. — Teen Time

There will be games, books, and a place to study here in the Teen Department. Teens ages 12 to 19, are always welcome to come and hang out anytime, but during teen time, snacks are available.

6 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This is a read-aloud storytime.  Every Thursday, Ms. Tara will read aloud from a chapter book while participants eat chips and follow along. This is activity is for all ages.

6:30 to 8 p.m. — Spring Local History Lecture Series

The lecture series is supported by the Friends of Niles District Library and Niles History Center.  This month’s presentation will be Boxes for Civil War Soldiers: Comfort From Home by Faye Chamberlain.

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Passports and Pajamas

This is an activity for all ages and abilities. It is world traveling through stories, music, and a craft, all while wearing pajamas.

Friday, May 10

10 a.m. to noon — TOPS

Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization.  New members are welcome!

1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

People can bring a yarn or sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while they chat and work. Rookies are welcome. David is here to provide help and instructions, and there will be a few loaner tools to get people started. 

4:30 p.m. — Tween Book Club

This is a book discussion group for children ages 8 to 12. This month’s book is “11 Birthdays” by Wendy Mass. Next month’s book will be Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai. 

Saturday, May 11

10:30 a.m. — Toddler Dance Party

This musical program is aimed for toddlers to help strengthen their brain and body muscles.  Music to reinforce hand eye coordination, cross brain exercises, and tactile and sensory movements. This program is for children ages infant to 5.

11 a.m. — Moms and Muffins

All ages and abilities are invited to celebrate the mother figure in their life with this fun Mother’s Day program. All moms and their children will be treated to a story time, craft, and yummy muffins.

1 to 5 p.m. — Game Day for Adults

This activity is for people who are 18 or older and like video games or board games. In addition, there will be cards, tabletop games, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U games set up and ready for people to enjoy.

1 p.m. — Junior Garden Club

Each month, Ann will present a lesson on gardening and nature. There will also be a snack, and a craft connected with the topic.  This group is for ages 3 to 12.  This month children will plant a mystery vegetable.

6 p.m. — Teen and Adult Nerf Night

Teens 13 and older and adults are invited to come to the library for an after-hours round of Nerf games with an emphasis on strategy and teamwork. Registration is 5:30 to 6 p.m. The library closes at 6 p.m. and attendees must arrive before the library closes.  Game play begins at 6 and ends at 8 p.m. All participants must have a signed waiver on file in order to play.
