NILES — The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a witness believed to have seen or have information about an alleged arson that took place at the Niles Walmart on Friday, April 26.

Authorities posted the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department announcement on their Facebook page Monday afternoon and asked for the public’s help in identifying a woman captured on store security footage.

The fire occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. inside the store’s clothing department. According to Niles Township Fire Chief Gary Brovold, store employees acted quickly and were able to successfully contain the fire. All customers and employees were able to evacuate the store uninjured.

Brovold approximated that authorities were on the scene for about three hours clearning smoke from the building. Walmart reopened at around 8 p.m. Friday, April 26 but was unable to sell food until Saturday morning, when the health department determined food on the floor was not damaged by the smoke.

Authorities emphasized in the post that the woman is being sought only as a witness. Those with any information are advised to call the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department detectives at 1-866-630-7679 or (269) 983-1747 extension 7224 or to message them on Facebook.
