DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac softball and baseball teams got very different draws for the Division 2 district tournament in South Haven later this month.
The Chieftain softball team drew Benton Harbor and will host a pre-district contest May 28, while the baseball team drew perennial powerhouse Niles for its pre-district game.
Dowagiac has dominated Benton Harbor throughout the years in softball dating back to its time in the SMAC conference.
The winner of the Chieftain-Tigers tilt will advance to the 10 a.m. semifinal in South Haven June 1.
“You could say we got the good end of the district draw, but we still have to go through the state runner-up in South Haven from last year, if we beat a much-improved Benton Harbor team in the pre-district game,” said Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke. “It is nice any time you can get Lakeshore, Edwardsburg and Niles on the same side to battle it out before you potentially have to play them.”
Behnke believes the Vikings are the district favorite.
In the other half of the bracket, Niles received a bye and will face the winner of the Edwardsburg-Lakeshore pre-district game at 4:30 p.m. May 28 in Edwardsburg.
The winner will play the Vikings in the second semifinal scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
The championship game is set for 3 p.m.
Dowagiac will host Niles at 4 p.m. in the May 28 pre-district game.
The winner will play two-time defending state champion Lakeshore in the second semifinal at 12:30 p.m.
Edwardsburg will host South Haven in a 4:30 p.m. pre-district game May 28 with the winner advancing to face Benton Harbor in the first semifinal at 10 a.m. June 1.
The championship game is set for 3 p.m.
Tickets are $5 and no passes of any kind will be accepted per the Michigan High School Athletic Association.
