NILES — Authorities assisted an elderly woman who was trapped inside her smoke-filled home Tuesday morning at 631 Fifth St. in Niles.
Emergency personnel responded to the call around 9:06 a.m. Niles Fire Chief Larry Lamb said the woman was removed from the home uninjured.
“With the help of the Niles Police Department, Michigan State Police and us, Niles City and Niles Township Fire departments, we got her out,” Lamb said.
Throughout the morning, authorities worked to determine the origin of the smoke. Lamb said firefighters did not find a fire and suspect that the smoke may have been from an appliance.
SEMCO Energy Gas Company responded to shut down appliances, and the furnace was also shut off. After they shut off appliances, Lamb said the smoke stopped. Lamb described it as a light smoke and said it did not damage the woman’s home.
Three firetrucks, an ambulance and police cars lined a portion of Fifth Street as authorities worked at the scene Tuesday morning. Police helped to direct traffic throughout the incident.
Lamb praised first responders work at the scene.
“You look around, and you see 10 to 15 firefighters here and a bunch of law enforcement people. That’s our partnership that we have developed over the years with Niles City and Niles Township coming to roost,” Lamb said. “We very much appreciate their help.”
