NILES – The Niles District Library seeks to build a community of lifelong learners who want to make Niles their lifelong home. A library card is not required to participate in any programs. All programs are free.

Monday, April 22

• 6 to 7 p.m. — Tween Game Night

This activity is ideal for tweens ages 9 to 12. There will be XBox and board games out, as well as art and crafts supplies. Snacks provided.

• 7 p.m. — Happy Destiny Support Group

The purpose of A.A. group meetings is for members to share their experience, strength, and hope with each other so that they may solve their common problem and to help others recover from alcoholism. Open meetings are available to anyone interested in the program or recovery.

Tuesday, April 23

• 10 a.m. — SkillShare Card Making

People are welcome to join Sandy downstairs in SkillShare making seasonal cards on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. All materials will be provided, but bringing scissors and adhesive is advised.

• 10:30 a.m. — Passport Pals

Each week, participants can take part in books, songs, crafts and other super surprises relating to the country of the month. They can also get a stamp on their passport.

• 6 to 7 p.m. — STEM Stars 

This activity is ideal for those ages 6-12. The teacher will help students learn about different STEM topic. This program includes a read-aloud and a science, technology, engineering or math project to work on.

• 6:30 to 8 p.m. — Olive Branch Book Club

This event is held at the Brass Eye Cocktail Lounge, 205 N. 2nd Street. A book club at a bar? Why not? This club offers the opportunity to have a drink, mingle, and talk about a book.

Wednesday, April 24

• 9:30 a.m. — Squealers

This activity is ideal for babies birth to 18 months old. This lap sit program intended for babies and caregivers features, a fingerplay, song, board book, and 10 minutes of baby play and bubbles.

• 10 a.m. — Squeakers

This activity is ideal for children ages 18 months-3 years. This will be a short story time with one book, a finger play, and a song.  The activity will end with bubbles. The activity also seeks to improve skills like sitting quietly, listening to a story independently, and following directions.

• 10:30 a.m. — Squigglers

This activity is ideal for children ages 18 months to 5 years. This story time program is structured like the beginning of a preschool class.  Children will work on a calendar, letter of the day, and a color song, with two books and music and movement.

• 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

This activity is ideal for children ages 3 and up. This story time features three books, a color song, and music and movement.  The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet, and a craft.

• 1 to 4 p.m. — MI Works!

Michigan Works! will be at the library to assist job seekers every other Wednesday afternoon. Talent Development Specialists can help people register for unemployment, evaluate their strengths and skills, edit or help update their resume, sharpen their interview skills and more.

• 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. — Video Game Dialogues

This activity is like a book club for video games. Participants 17 years and older will play a designated game each month. Then attend an evening with fellow gamers to discuss their experiences with the storyline and gameplay. Games will be made available to play on during Adult Game Days on the second Saturday of each month.

• 7 p.m. — Happy Destiny Support Group

Open A.A. meetings are available to anyone interested in the program or recovery.

Thursday, April 25

• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. — Storytime

This activity is for children ages 3 and up. This story time features three books, a color song, and music and movement. The program will end with a hand stamp, coloring sheet, and a craft.

• 1 to 4:30 p.m. — American Mahjong

Volunteers are available weekly to teach people how to play Mahjong.

• 6 to 7:30 p.m. —Teen Time

There will be games, books, and a place to study here in the Teen Department. Teens ages 12-19 are welcome to attend. Snacks provided.

• 6 p.m. — Chips and Chapters

This is a read-aloud storytime.  Every Thursday Tara Hunsberger will read aloud from a chapter book while participants eat chips and follow along. This activity is for all ages.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — History Presentations by Jason Kuntz: Amelia Earhart

The community is invited to take part in bit of history with Jason Kuntz as he discusses the life of Amelia Earhart.  Kuntz is a 2006 graduate of Buchanan High School and a 2011 graduate of Western Michigan University.

• 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. — Passports and Pajamas

This is activity is for all ages and abilities. It will include world traveling through stories, music, and a craft, all while wearing pajamas.

Friday, April 26

• 10 a.m. to noon — TOPS

Take Off Pounds Sensibly  is a nonprofit, noncommercial weight-loss support group and wellness education organization.  New members are welcome.

• 1 to 3 p.m. — Twisted Stitches

People can bring their yarn or sewing project and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while they chat and work. Rookies are welcome. David Hollister, the teacher, will help provide instructions, and there are few loaner tools to get people started.

Saturday, April 27

• 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid is early help offered to a young person experiencing a mental health challenge, disorder or crisis. YMHFA is provided until appropriate help is received or until the crisis is resolved.  This free eight-hour course is designed for adults who regularly interact with youth, between 12 and 18 years of age, including parents, legal guardians, teachers, coaches, faith leaders and caring citizens who want to help youth.  A training manual and certificate are provided upon completion. Pre-registration is required by calling (269) 556-2808 or by email at talbers@lakelandhealth.org.   A light breakfast and lunch will be served.

• 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Gamer Space

This activity seeks to offers gamers a place to play card games or tabletop games. Those interested can bring their own game or try one of from the “Library of Things.”

• 1 to 2 p.m. — City of Niles Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

The treatment plant is located at 21 Marmont St.  It plays a significant role in protecting local surface water and the St. Joseph River. People can come see how the treatment process works and why it is so important to the community. A short presentation, along with a walk around tour, will give insight into the production, collection, and treatment of wastewater. For their safety, children under 12 years old cannot attend.
